February and March are excellent times to prune most deciduous trees. The trees are still dormant, the branches can be easily seen, and the tree can recover better in the spring. Use sharp tools and use proper pruning techniques!

bulletGetting ready to plant flowering trees in the spring? Here is one to avoid planting, Callery or Bradford Pear.  This type of Pear typically has a short life span, actually "self destructing", failing and splitting in 10 to 15 years. A better choice for a flowering pear would be 'Chanticleer', 'Select', or 'Stone Hill'.
bulletIf you are using wood chips for mulch remember to let them compost for 2-3 years. Plants will benefit from composted chips much more. A top dressing of newer chips can always be added for aesthetics.
bulletWeed problems last year? Plan now to control them. Weed control barriers, new mulch or a pre-emergent weed control are all effective.
